Scholarship InformationWHY APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS?Scholarships are designed as an award for a student’s academic performance, community involvement and financial need.Despite the fact that many post-secondary schools (2-year and 4-year) offer scholarships or grant opportunities for tuition and fees, attending school is expensive. Outside scholarships can assist with other costs such as food, books and supplies. In addition, scholarships can be a resume builder, assist with a Study Abroad program, and allow membership to a scholarly group or organization (National Honor Society).WHERE TO FIND SCHOLARSHIPS?
- Lower Dauphin High School uses Naviance, a college and career-readiness software provider, to give students access to national, regional, local and LDHS scholarships as well as a list of search engines. New scholarships are added weekly/monthly, so check the site regularly. Naviance Access Instructions: Open Naviance>Colleges Tab>Under Scholarships and Money, select Scholarship Search. Use the “Clear Filters” button to view all available scholarships or use the “Match and Filter” button to apply more criteria.

WHAT ARE SOME COMMON TIPS WHEN APPLYING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS?

- Start early. Teachers/outside contacts need time to write letters of recommendation.
- Watch for scholarship scams
- Red flag – Online application fees or requests for personal finances
- Warning Sign -“Guaranteed” outcomes or “special” or “preferred” access
- Read requirements and print clearly
- Write a good essay. Play on strengths such as GPA, leadership skills, community service and school involvement
