The Wizard of Oz (2002)-14467
After several years of less well known musicals, Lower Dauphin High School took audiences “over the rainbow” in March 2002 with its performance of “The Wizard of Oz.”
Forty-five high school students danced and sang in the story of a young girl from Kansas who has incredible adventures in the Land of Oz. The stage version is based on the familiar motion picture, yet differs in some key concepts. “The characters and musical numbers everyone looks forward to are there, but there are some changes to make it more appropriate for the stage,” explains director Kevin M. Strawser.
The cast of students in grades 9-12 was led by Ashleigh Brewer as “Dorothy” and Libby Garner as the “Wicked Witch of the West.” Brian Freed was the “Scarecrow;” Steve Werner portrayed the “Tin Woodsman;” and Brandon Wiestling played the role of the “Cowardly Lion.” Other principle roles included Sara Adams as the “Sorceress of the North,” Meridith Bailey as “Gloria,” and Mike Curci as the “Wizard of Oz” himself.
Linda Whitenight Hummel was the music director. Nanette Kimmel was the choreographer and Lynlee Copenhaver was the vocal coach. Familiar songs from the musical include “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” “If I Only Had a Brain,” and “Ding-Dong the Witch is Dead.”
