Mu Alpha Theta
What is the history of Mu Alpha Theta?
Mu Alpha Theta, the National High School and Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society, was formed in 1957 at the University of Oklahoma. We are dedicated to inspiring a keen interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics in high school and two-year college students. Currently, more than 100,000 students are Mu Alpha Theta members at more than 2,420 schools in the United States and in 23 foreign countries.
What are the requirements to be in Mu Alpha Theta?
Membership, High School Chapter:
- Members must be high school students in grades 9 through 12.
- Members must be registered with Mu Alpha Theta at the school at which their permanent records reside. Students will be registered by Ms. Maurer.
- Members must have completed the equivalent of two years of college preparatory mathematics, including algebra and/or geometry, and have completed or are enrolled in a third year of college preparatory mathematics. At Lower Dauphin, students must have completed Algebra 2 and maintain a cumulative math score of 90% or above in all prior math courses (this grade does not need to be maintained after the student is inducted into the society).
- On the 4-point grading scale, members must have at least a 3.0 math grade point average.
- Students must pay a $20 fee to join. This will cover their registration into Mu Alpha Theta and also pay for their Math Honor society cores for graduation.
- Students must also bring in 2 pies on Pie day in order to be registered on the Mu Alpha Theta database. Students will NOT be registered officially until they have fulfilled this requirement.
What are the key benefits of being a member of Mu Alpha Theta?
- Provides a method for schools to recognize and encourage students who enjoy and excel in mathematics.
- Organizes a national convention for students and teachers to participate in math-related events and interact with others from across the country.
- Rewards outstanding extracurricular achievement by offering special awards, scholarships, and grants to students and their faculty advisers.

How to join the Math Honor Society here at Lower Dauphin.
Students will need to fill out a registration form during the first marking period of the school year. This form will need to be submitted to Ms. Maurer prior to the deadline which will be announced in school. Once a student's application is reviewed, they will be personally notified of their acceptance. Once a student is accepted, this does not mean they are a full member of the Mu Alpha Theta. They will also need to turn in their $20 registration fee along with completing their pie day obligations. Students will be required to attend all Math Honor Society Zoom meetings which will be scheduled and emailed out to each student. These Zoom meetings will focus on Pie day preparations and possible guest speakers. There will be a total of 2-4 Zoom meetings ranging from 30 minutes to an hour. There will also be one face-to-face meeting that will happen closer to Pie day in order for students to sign up and work on Pie day.
If you are a returning member of the Math Honor society (meaning you have gone through the registration process and been accepted), you will still be required to attend the Zoom meetings and participate in Pie Day until you graduate and receive your cords.
