AP Statistics
*GRAPHING CALCULATORS ARE REQUIRED: TI 83, TI 84, or TI 84 plus*
COURSE CONTENT: This course includes the following concepts:
- Exploring One Variable Data—Graphical and Numerical Analysis
- Exploring Two Variable Data—Graphical and Numerical Analysis
- Gathering Data—Observational Studies and Experiments
- Probability—Theory, Random Variables and Distributions
- Sampling Distributions for Proportions and Means
- Statistical Inference: Confidence Intervals for Means and Proportions
- Statistical Inference: One Sample Hypothesis Tests
- Statistical Inference: Two Sample Hypothesis Tests
- Other Hypothesis Tests: Chi Square and Linear Regression Tests
DESCRIPTION: Advanced Placement Statistics gives students a college-level learning experience, equivalent to a first year statistics course including the concepts of data analysis, linear regression, data collection, probability and statistical inference. Statistics is unlike other mathematics courses; it focuses on the context as well as the numerical answer. Good attendance is essential for mastery of the verbal connections between concepts and numbers. This course can be rewarding for many students, as they learn to apply numbers in different fields of study.

COLLEGE CREDIT: Students may take the Advanced Placement exam at the beginning of May and will have to register for this option in November. The cost will be $95 this year. Some schools will give credit for scores of 3 or higher, but many require a 4 or 5.
ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS/GRADING:
- Purchase a large binder, with room for notes, homework and handouts.
- Bring a graphing calculator, textbook and laptop to class every day.
- Do homework regularly. Homework may be collected or checked at the discretion of the teacher.
- Prepare for tests. Tests will be AP level and will require preparation. Extended time will not be given (unless prior permission is granted) in an effort to best prepare for the AP exam.
- Grades will be based on total points from assignments, quizzes, tests, projects and graded problems. There may be a midterm exam and on-line AP Progress checks.
- Any student who elects to take the AP exam shall be exempt from the course’s final exam if and only if the student’s cumulative average for the course is 85% or better at the end of the fourth marking period.
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:
- Be on time for class and be ready to begin when the bell rings.
- Bring materials to class. I will not provide these for you.
- Have my permission to leave the room and sign out.
- Show respect to others in the room.
- Obey all school rules.
- Cell phones will be away, except for activities which require their use. Over the past few years, I have seen that cell phones are a persistent, difficult distraction for student learning. Students who do not comply with this rule will be asked to put their phone in the case in the front of the room. Persistent violators of the rule will be referred to administration.
Discipline Policy on Cheating/ Plagiarism
Any student that violates academic integrity on any assignment or assessment will receive a 0 for that assignment or assessment. They will NOT be permitted to re-take or make up this assignment. Cheating is defined as (but not limited to): copying others during an assessment or in homework, trading/ exchanging assessments during assessment time, using technology to find answers prior to or during an assessment, using unauthorized tools or worksheets during assessments.
ABSENCES:
- When absent due to excused illness, you are given the number of days equal to the number of school days you were absent to make up work, including tests/quizzes.
- When an absence is planned, fill out sheet to request work. Planned absences are not illnesses and students are responsible for being caught up upon his or her return.
A positive learning environment is created only by the Students and Teacher working together as one.
To do this, communication is key! I encourage you to ask questions and communicate openly with me whenever you have any concerns. I am more than happy to meet with you to discuss these concerns if you do not feel comfortable asking in front of the class. You may also reach me at any time through email: smaurer@ldsd.org (I check my email nearly every hour during daytime hours) or through canvas messages.
